Improve Google Ranking with HTTPS

Google are encouraging website owners to improve security by making it a ranking factor in their search engine.

Google are now rewarding websites with the HTTPS security feature in their search rankings.

HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol and the S stands for Secure.

What does it do?

HTTPS encrypts data sent between your browser and the website you are visiting. In essence it protects the security and privacy of everything you do on that website, most of the time.

How does it impact you?

The data that could be collected from an innocent visitor to a non HTTPS website could be collated and when reviewed could potentially help someone compromise your online security and privacy.

Google SEO benefit

Now, Google is attempting to encourage more website owners to increase their security by offering the carrot of improving those all-important search rankings for websites that use the HTTPS protocol.

Right now, it’s just a “lightweight signal that will affect “fewer than 1% of global queries and carrying less weight than other signals such as high-quality content.”

However, it is highly likely that ‘lightweight signal” will increase over time as Google wants to encourage more website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep more people safe on the web.
