Online Advertising Overtaking Newspaper Advertsing

Advertsisers are likely to place more budget online than with national newspapers, says a report from GroupM.

The report highlights that Online Marketing is taking a share of the market from TV, Newspaper and Direct Marketing.

This gradual shift is likely to continue, as more and more people are online and advertising online is cheaper than other methods of marketing. When you add to that, easier campaign execution, quicker camapign cycles, detailed metrics, it is clear that online marketing is set for a great future.

FAQ’s Back Links for Beginners

Having good quality backlinks is one of the important factors in Search Engine Promotion. More than ever before, it is the quality of the backlink to your site that will help your website rank well in the search engines.

What are backlinks? Backlinks are website address links that, when clicked, will direct the web user to your website.

This is a backlink to our blog homepage – www.thuk.co.uk/blog

Why are backlinks important? Backlinks are important because the search engines consider backlinks to a website as a vote of quality for the receiving website. Search engines will improve the ranking of websites that have good quality backlinks.

Will any backlink add quality to my website? No. Search engines consider the quality of the backlink that is pointing to your website. Here are some considerations.

Backlinks will carry more weight if they are;

From Well Ranked Websites – An established well ranked website with a backlink to your website will carry more weight than a backlink from a brand new website, with no ranking.
Relevant Backlinks – They come from a website that has relevant content to your website.
One of Few Links – The page linking to you has few backlinks (not generic directories).
Anchor Text – The link to you is anchored with your keyphrase.

This is an anchor text link to our blog homepage, the keyphrase Online Marketing Blog carries a hyperlink – Online Marketing Blog

From an Authoratitive Site – Trade associations, government sites, industry portals etc.
Contained in Content – The backlink is contained in content, as opposed to an advertising backlink at the bottom of a page.
Are Aged - Backlinks that point to a website for some time.

Understanding these principles is important when starting out on your Search Engine Promotion campaign. There are many other factors to consider, but backlinks should be given a priority when planning a Search Engine Promotion campaign.

Possible Paypal Competitor from Google?

Eagle eyed  people who watch who registers what domains have noticed that Google have registered (via a proxy) googlecheckout.net.

Some commentators think this may be an indication that this may be Googles version of paypal

Garett Rogers  at zdnet comments

“I think it will be a shopping cart system to help websites accept payment for their items on line.  The money site owners make will be deposited into a holding account at Google — just like ad sense works.”

I think that this is a plausible and could give website owners an extra way of integrating payment into their sites and if it linked up with ad sense, froogal and google base could almost provide a full online shop.

New Domain Name for Mobile – .Mobi

.mobi domain nameMonday 1500 hrs GMT – 22nd May 2006, saw the launch of the domain name .mobi.

The domain has been created to help the use of browsing through a wireless mobile device. The idea being that content at the .mobi domain will support mobile browsers. It also highlights the adoption of browsing through a mobile device.

Until May 29th 2006, registrations are being accepted from companies that are in the mobile industry. From the middle of June 2006, holders of trademarks can register, then September opens registrations to the general public.

It will be interesting to see what kind of take up the .mobi domain gets, as there is nothing to stop a website at any domain extension building a site for mobile use. In fact some industry players are suggesting that adding a .mobi domain is just over complicating matters and that there are enough domains available already.

Staircase Advertising

Staircase AdvertisingI had a meeting recently with the founder of Media Steps. Media Steps are a UK based company that, provide a unique way of advertising. They supply the staircase advertising in high traffic locations such as train stations and football stadiums throughout the UK. The current network of step advertising sites, sees a yearly footfall of 260 million regular ABC1 commuters through the 360 poster step sites, at high traffic commuter railway stations in the UK.
This form of outdoor marketing is a great way to build brand awareness, support an online, or offline marketing campaign and at very reasonable prices. The high impact medium provides advertisers with a teriffic platform to deliver messages, which audiences almost cannot fail to see.

Google Issues, Opens the Door for Other Search Engines

Open Door Other Search EnginesI’ve previously highlighted that Google are making changes colloquially referred to as “Big Daddy” – and that further changes were in the pipeline.

The last few weeks it has become apparent that there has been a lot of Google inconsistencies, some sites are reporting 99% plus of their pages disappearing from Google’s index.

Google as ever is not publicly saying anything, however, our opinion is that Google implemented some new methods to rank websites and in the process, were too aggressive in deleting sites and are having to rebuild large parts of there index. We have noticed a lot more activity by Google in scanning sites, which lends weight to this hypothesis.

We have been very active in making changes and finding workarounds – whilst not overnight solutions we have had some good success in making sure pages are exposed in Google’s index.

More positively, whilst some sites may have lost some of their exposure, others have gained ranking. Also, due to the performance issues of Google, other search engine have benefited (Yahoo!, MSN, ASK etc.), with more searchers using these search engines. This is a positive trend, as it maintains pressure on Google to straighten out their problems and with a greater spread of searches across the different engines, your website is less reliant on one source of traffic.

One trend we have noticed with Yahoo! and MSN is that they are far quicker than Google to index pages. With searchers wanting to access up to date information, such as news, these engines are going to gain a march on Google!

Search Engine Marketers Love Google Trends

Search Engine MarketersGoogle hit the press again his week with the release of their new Google Trends tool.

Google Labs have this week released Google Trends. Its a tool which lets you find out how many searches have been conducted for a given term. You can set the search to look back as far as 2004, with monthly figures available for 2005 and 2006. Of more use is the comparative trend option, where you can compare the trends for up to 5 terms. The tool also lets you view the data by region, or language.

The reports are a useful addittion to the Search Engine Marketers toolbox, who will be able to compare keywords, brands and view seasonal peaks and troughs.

This example plots the trends of the conservative party (in blue) and the labour party (in red), with a filter to show the United Kingdom’s searches. It shows the labour party have received more searches, but look at the peak during the last election in May 05!

Search Engine Promotion: Big Daddy Takes a Fall

Search Engine Promotion: Big DaddyIn a previous post Big Daddy Arrives I mentioned that there may be future changes to Google.

And Boy it looks like there has been!

After Big Daddy was finished around the start of April, people started reporting major problems, some sites were reporting 99% plus of there pages disappearing from Google’s index.

I have seen problems fist hand with client sites losing a lot of Google exposure, resulting in a loss of business.

The problems may be related to other issues. Google’s CEO recently admitted that some of there machines were full “We have a huge machine crisis” (view comment).

So there maybe undisclosed problems with the computers that Google uses to provide its service – though with the amount of cash that Google generates, one does have to question why they are in that situation.

It could be a separate issue, that there was a momentous foul-up in the roll out of the new algorithms, that had unintended consequences.

The widespread concern with the SEO community has been noticed by more main stream press, with the Register doing an article last Thursday.

There are steps you can take to help protect your situation, we have been very active in making changes and working on our clients’ sites – whist not an overnight solution we have had some success in making sure their pages are exposed in Google’s index.

I’ll comment more on what we are doing to resolve the Google issues once are tests have been fully processed.

Boom or Bust?

The Wall Street Journal runs a piece today, highlighting some of the more high profile online / technology fads that have not been successful. Most cost millions to develop and market. View Article
Highlights include:

Flooz.com, who attempted to create a digital currency.

iSmell, who wanted to improve your web experience by generating smell via your USB port.

and Microsofts iLoo, the internet enabled toilet.

Some of these ideas are obviously ridiculous. Just goes to show that even the large corporations (Microsoft) and highly experienced business investors can make some big mistakes.
