Online Marketing Experiment

A recent blog post at the Marketing Experiments Journal really caught my eye.

The journal runs online marketing experiments, to see what works online. What I found really interesting in this experiment is they also tested the intuition of a number of marketing professionals. Here is the “Intuition is more glamorous than process, but…” blog post.

Here is a highlight from the article.
Which subject line would perform the best…?

1. Test Your Marketing Intuition

2. An MEC Invitation: Test Your Marketing Skills

3. So You Think You’re A Marketing Expert? Prove it here..

What do you think would perform best?

The marketing team voted; 3 – top, 1 – 2nd, 2 – last.

Actual Results

Number 2 got the best open rate and number 3 received the best click through rates.

This online marketing experiment shows that intuition alone does not always stand up, so TEST, TEST, TEST.

email authenticationAmongst email marketers and email service providers, the hot topic of the moment is email authentication.

Email authentication as defined by Wikipedia

Ensuring a valid identity on an e-mail has become a vital first step in stopping spam, forgery, fraud, and even more serious crimes. An essential second step will be Ensuring the entity has a good reputation. Unfortunately, the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) that handles most e-mail today was designed in an era when users of the Internet were mostly honest techies who expected others to be equally honest.

A recent article by ClickZ author Kevin Newcomb, gives an overview of some of the options being adopted.

Search Engine Promotion – Page Rank Toolbar, Lets Put it to Bed

pagerank.gif“Wondering whether a new website is worth your time? Use the Toolbar’s PageRank display to tell you how Google’s algorithms assess the importance of the page you’re viewing.”This is the description given to the Google PageRank display on the Google toolbar, by Google.

If you’re not familiar with the PageRank display, its available as an option when you download the Google toolbar.

The reason I write about it now, is that it is still perceived by many to be the yardstick with which to evaluate the importance Google give to a web page.

I’ll give you an example, we have been working with a client in the insurance industry, following 3 months of hard graft by my search engine promotion team, we lifted the site from Google obscurity, to a page 1 listing. We held a review meeting with our client and they raised a concern, one of their competitors had a higher Google PageRank than their optimised site.

The fact that our clients site was ranked above their competitors, didn’t seem to matter. It was our clients perception, particularly when they highlighted that Google say its how they rank the importance of the page.

Of course we explained that what matters is where the page is ranked, but it did make us think. We are in the search engine promotion industry, we know the Google PageRank display is insignificant, but those not in the industry, don’t.

To demonstrate to our client, we ran a test. Taking an unused new domain we had, we added some nonsense text with links pointing to the same page. We linked to the site to get it indexed by Google and waited. Within 5 weeks, the site, with just two inbound links managed to gain a PageRank of 5/10. Something which some good quality sites with lots of content and lots of links, fail to achieve.

So if Google gives the impression that the PageRank display bar assesses the page importance, why is this page important? The answer is, the page isn’t important.

What is the point of the PageRank? If a searcher is looking to make a purchase online and they arrive at a website with the item of their dreams at a price they can afford, should they be put off, if the PageRank display gives them a low rating?

The only use of the PageRank display, would be for people wanting to optimise their site, but if the results the PageRank display gives are inaccurate as demonstrated in the test, then it is of no use to optimisers either.

Let’s put the PageRank Display to bed.

Search Engine Promotion Report – 62% don’t go past the first few pages

A new study on search engine user behaviour, underlines the importance of having your website ranked on the first few pages of the search engines for keywords.

“The iProspect Search Engine User Behavior Study”, conducted by Jupiter Research, shows that search engine users are now a fickle bunch who are becoming better at using search engines to find relevant information.

Highlights from the report:

62% of search engine users don’t look past the first few pages of seach engine results

39% don’t look past the first page

82% of users attempt to refine their search

36% of users link placement to company prominence

In summary, the report demonstrates that unless your website is found in the first few pages, it is not going to be found.

Keyword usage is highly important, particularly longer, more specific terms.

Your company is often viewed as a ‘top’ company, if it is found in the first few pages of the search engines.

This report suggests that if you’re not ranking well for the right keywords, you’re missing out on highly qualified traffic.

The entire report can be downloaded from the iProspect website here (PDF).

1 Million .EU Domains Registered Since Friday

EU-Flag.gifThere are now more than 1.3 million registered .eu domain names, following Friday’s open shop. Friday was when any EU based person, or organisation had the opportunity to register their domain.

It really was a land rush with applications being made at an average speed of 76 per second.

At the time of publishing this article, the countries leading the table were:

Germany 419,503
Britain 270,105
Holland 154,371
Italy 81,289

About 1 million of the .eu domain names were registered since the general launch on Friday, with 335,000 of the applications being received during the sunrise period (by application prior to Friday), although 95,000 of these were duplicated.

Our own experience of the .eu availability has been one of annoyance. We registered www.thuk.eu during the sunrise period and have landed it, however we also registered a couple of domains on Friday morning. The domain registration company we use, showed availability for two domain names we wanted, which we registered and paid for. However, it seems as though these names have not been allocated to us, despite them showing in our hosting package.

What’s frustrating is that had we known these domain names were not available, we could have looked for similar names. Now, anything close to the names we wanted has gone!

I wonder how many other people will have similar disappointments?

Search Engine Promotion: How To Protect Your Inbound Links When Changing Your Website

search-engine-promotionIf you are having a website revamp, or completely changing your website design and structure, you may be concerned about the effect this will have on your website rankings.

We were recently asked by one of our readers what they can do to protect their rankings, when changing their website.

Here is some of the advice we provided…

When updating your website one of the main things to consider, is what is going to happen to all of the links that currently point to your website pages. It’s important to make sure that existing links to your site don’t get lost. Think of each link to a page on your site, as being regarded as a vote for that page by the search engines. The more links (votes) a page receives, the more important the search engines think your page is.

So what do we do?

If the new page URL (web address) is exactly the same as the old URL, there is no problem (Note: urls are case sensitive). However, if a page URL changes you have to make sure that any links you had to this URL aren’t lost.

To give an example:

Your page is currently

http://www.thuk.co.uk/blog

and lets say that on the new site its…

http://www.thuk.co.uk/pages/services/blogs.html

You will need to redirect any references to http://www.thuk.co.uk/blog to its new home at http://www.thuk.co.uk/pages/services/blogs.html

This must be done as a permanent redirect (your server administrator should be able to help you do this, if this is too technical).

This should be carried out for all pages on the old site unless the URL is absolutely identical. If a page on the old site has no direct equivalent on the new site, then it is could be directed to the home page.

You should delete the old pages after all the redirects are setup and working, as you don’t want search engines looking at them, or searchers accidentally visiting the old site.

If you just delete the old pages, peoples bookmarks may fail and you will lose some of your position in the search engines, as they drop non-existent URLS, hence the reason why they should be redirected.

Whilst you are on the topic of making these adjustments, you may also want to make sure that the webserver is setup correctly to handle the non www version of any URL, so that any link without the www prefix, gets redirected to the www version.

Example:

http://totallyinsuredgroup.co.uk

should be redirected to…

http://www.totallyinsuredgroup.co.uk

.EU Domain – On General Release

.EU-Domain.gifToday sees the Landrush Phase for the .eu domain. From 10:00 am today, European residents can register their own .eu domain name.

Until today the process has been limited to trademark holders and more recently people wishing to register their company, or family names in the EU.

The new domain names, thus far, have been registered on a first come first served basis, with our European counterparts being quicker than us Brit’s, in preventing their domain names from going to competitors.

NetNames, one of the accredited registrars for the .eu domain, provided these statistics.

Country        Percent
Germany       28.6
Dutch          16.6
French         11
British          9.2

NetNames estimate that there have been 330,000 applications, all vying for 235,000 .eu domains

Some high profile names have missed out on their preferred domains. NetNames said, Volkswagen, Ralph Lauren and Nestle had all tried to preregister polo.eu. While all three applied within 5 minutes of each other, VW was first and has secured the domain while Ralph Lauren came second missing out by just 3 minutes and 24 seconds.

Skype are said to have made 16 applications, using different registrars. Google put in 1 application, they felt pretty comfortable about claiming their .eu domain.

If you want to order your .eu domain today, do so here.
